Today we got into the serious task of station handover where
we were shown where all the hardware is located and all the many software
applications driving them. It was a very busy day and by five o’clock my brain
was fried so I went for a wander down to the old station to look at the old
heritage listed original Mawson buildings from 1954.
It was a somber experience
walking through all the old rooms where Bill worked and used to live. The main
building has been renovated and is now really nice and we are thinking of using
it as a music room. All the other buildings have been neglected and let go
which was very disturbing to me. I will make a point of cleaning out each
building and putting signs up so future expeditioners might understand the
heritage of these buildings and respect them much better.
One of Bills mates
“Chompers” had his name written on his bunk, but Bills donga (Law hut) had long
been removed and a couple of old rusty sea containers put in its place which is
a shame. I think they should renovate all these buildings and use them during
resupply and also the winter expeditioners could sleep out in them to get the
feel of what it used to be like in the early days.
